“Some days, I leave work wondering if I gave enough to my family. Other days, I leave home wondering if I gave enough to my work.”
If I am honest, one of the biggest challenges of balancing motherhood and a career is not the schedule, the routines, or even the long days. It is the guilt.
Guilt has a way of showing up quietly. It appears when work requires extra time and I miss moments at home. It appears when I am tired and cannot give my best energy to everyone who needs me. It appears when I compare myself to unrealistic expectations of what a perfect mother or a perfect leader should be.
For a long time, I thought balance meant giving equal amounts of myself to every role. But I am learning that true balance is not about perfection. It is about being present where I am and accepting that some days will look different from others.
Motherhood has taught me that my son does not need a perfect mother. He needs a loving one. Likewise, the people I work with do not need a perfect leader. They need an authentic one.
When guilt begins to creep in, I am learning to replace it with grace. Grace to acknowledge that I am doing my best. Grace to recognize that I cannot be everything to everyone all the time. Grace to celebrate what went well instead of focusing on what I think I should have done differently.
There will always be more work to do. There will always be competing demands. But there is freedom in letting go of the pressure to do it all perfectly.
These days, I am choosing grace over guilt, progress over perfection, and presence over pressure. And while I am still learning, that mindset has brought a little more peace to the journey. 💛
